WHAT IS A
TUMMY TUCK OR ABDOMINOPLASTY
This is a procedure where
excess skin and fat are removed from the tummy. This is
helpful for patients, both men and women, who have lost
weight and have a fold of skin that wont go away, after
childbirth, to remove stretch marks or bad scars from
Some patients will also need tightening of their tummy
muscles at the same time. Other procedures can sometimes be
combined, such as liposuction, arm reduction, breast uplift.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF TUMMY
The two common types are a full tummy tuck
and a mini tummy tuck. A full tummy tuck is where through a hip-to-hip cut,
the tummy skin is freed all the way up to the chest and then the excess skin
is removed. The belly button is freed up at the beginning of the procedure
and re-sited at the end at the correct level. The end result is a small scar
hidden in the belly button and a long hip-to-hip scar that hides within the
bikini line. A mini tummy tuck is where through a similar, but smaller scar
within the bikini, only the excess skin in the lower part of the tummy
(below the belly button) is removed. The belly button is pulled down
slightly, but there will be no scar in the belly button.
There are other types of tummy tuck that are
suitable for some patients. A Fleur-de-lys type procedure gives a
vertical scar in the midline of the tummy as well as the hip-to-hip scar,
but gives a better shape at the sides. This is particularly suitable for
patients who already have a midline scar and who have lost a lot of weight.
A reverse tummy tuck is suitable to correct fullness of upper tummy
only. It results in a scar under the breasts that sits within the bra.
WHAT TYPE IS SUITABLE FOR ME
This will depend on the amount of excess skin
you have, and also whether the muscles need tightening. A small excess (and
no muscle weakness) can easily be removed by a mini tummy tuck. I will
discuss the different types with their advantages in detail with you at the
anaesthesia, you will be a sleep.
Type of incision The final scar can be
designed according to your choice of underwear.
The scar can either be kept very low to hide within the panty line or can
curve upwards to hide within a thong type underwear.
Length of the operation 2-3 hours, depending
on the amount of skin to be removed. Length of stay 1-2 nights. There will
be 2 drains (tubes with attached bottles) to remove any blood/fluid
Recovery time is 2-3 weeks
after a mini tummy tuck.
After a full tummy tuck it is 4-6 weeks. You will need
regular painkillers for the first week or two. The recovery
takes a little longer if tummy muscles have been tightened.
Most activities can be started after 4 weeks. Strenuous
activity/sports may take 6-8 weeks.
All surgical procedures carry
a small risk of complications. For a tummy tuck the
complications can be bleeding, infection, slow healing,
lumpy scar, small chances of asymmetry, under-correction and
possibility of further surgery. A detailed explanation will
be given at the time of the consultation.
